Have you every walked past the discounted section in the supermarket. It is filled with perfectly good vegetables and fruits. All those perfectly eatable food is only in this section because we as a society have deemed them to be at the end of their life. On average a supermarket will throw away the equivalent of 190 million meals a year. Learning little tricks and skills will help reduce the food waste. Thinks like berries can be put into the freezer to be used for smoothies or turn them into a basic jam. Turning vegetables into soup or chutneys. Using old methods to store food so that is last longer, preserving fruit and veg means that there is always something in the cupboard.
There is nothing better than a homemade jar of jam. The smell of sugar and fresh berries bubbling away in the pot. The the colours that you get when they set in the jars. There is something comforting about opening a new jar of jam. Jam can seem daunting and scary to make but in reality it is very simple to make.

Blackberry Jam
300g Blackberries
300g Caster Sugar
1 Lemon juice
Place the berries into a saucepan and mash the berries with a potato masher. Then add the 300g of caster sugar, mix in the lemon juice. Stir together and bring to the boil. Once the mixture has thickened take it off the boil. You can keep the bits in the jam or sieve the jam mixture. The jam should be kept in a sterialised jar. Keep in cool dark cupboard for up to three months. It never lasts more than a week in my house.
